Hulinhjálmur, often translated as Helm of Disguise, is an Icelandic magical stave (symbol) from Norse folk magic traditions, especially the Galdrastafir.

Appearance and Structure
It usually consists of a central circle or ring with complex, symmetrical arms radiating outward, sometimes incorporating runic-like shapes. The exact form varies in surviving manuscripts, but the design is meant to “confuse” the gaze, serving as a visual metaphor for its magical purpose.

Meaning and Use

Purpose: Traditionally, the Hulinhjálmur was believed to grant invisibility or concealment from enemies, predators, or unwanted attention.

Name: In Old Norse, hulin means “hidden” or “concealed” and hjálmr means “helm” or “helmet,” so the name literally means “helm of concealment.”

Lore: In Icelandic grimoires from the 17th to 19th centuries, it is sometimes accompanied by ritual instructions, which might include chanting, placing the stave under the tongue, or drawing it on skin or objects.

Symbolic Function: Rather than literal invisibility like in fantasy novels, it likely referred to becoming unnoticed, overlooked, or protected from hostile notice, acting as a magical form of camouflage.
