The Rótkross is another magical stave (galdrastafur) found in Icelandic magical traditions, especially in grimoires from the 17th–19th centuries. Its name combines rót (“root”) and kross (“cross”), meaning “root cross.”

Appearance and Structure

The symbol often appears as a symmetrical cross with additional branching or radial elements extending from each arm, giving it a “rooted” look.

Some variations resemble a blend between a Christian cross and the Algiz rune shape, stylized to emphasize grounding and stability.

The design changes somewhat across different manuscripts, which was common for staves recorded by different scribes.

Meaning and Use

Purpose: The Rótkross was generally used for protection, healing, and spiritual strength.

Symbolism: The “root” aspect represents being firmly grounded, anchored against harm, while the “cross” invokes divine blessing or balance.

Occult Function: In some traditions, it was drawn on parchment or carved into objects to protect the bearer from disease, misfortune, or evil spirits.

Lore: The symbol might be activated through spoken galdr (incantations) or accompanied by written charms, depending on the magical system of the time.
